The Bleak Light of Day

Hafdis Huld – Happily Ever After

November 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

You’re sitting by the angel fountain
Do you want to share my blanked I ask you
Hoping for a positive answer
You smile and slowly walk towards me

As you come closer
I notice the unique colour of your eyes
A perfect blend of dark blue
And some king of yellow
But they don’t really match your shirt

We could live happily
Ever after
We could live happily
Ever after

You sit down close to me enough
For me to observe that you smell like honey
And I really like honey
Not as much as vanilla though

We talk in the sun for hours
And I tell you, you listen like a girl
You smile and understand that it’s a compliment
I like you

We could live happily
Ever after
We could live happily
Ever after

Before you leave you write your number
On a dirty paper cup
I walk home sunburnt in my face
Holding that paper cup next to my heart

We could live happily
Ever after
We could live happily
Ever after

A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian.

September 1, 2009 · Leave a Comment

tractors

I have got this small pocket edition with red and blue colors in the cover, and when I started to read it I thought that it was a funny light comedy about love between different ages partners, I was wrong because this novel is much more than it.

Yes, a “A short history” is funny, but is also magic and tragic.

Talks about complex family relationships and dark and hidden secrets.

It’s a parallel and very interesting history also about engineering, tractors that became tanks, cruelty and war.

Marina Lewycka creates unforgettable characters that are deep and rich. Valentina is a cheater, is a hunter, but she is a victim also.

I recommend you a quiet read without prejudices, and sure this genuine and honest history enthralls you.

Seven houses in France.

August 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Siete casas en Francia” is the latest Bernardo Atxaga’s novel.

Atxaga is  one of the most brilliant Spanish author who usually writes in Euskera, his mother tongue, but he personally monitors the translation process from Euskera to Spanish.

He is an author who enjoys discover fantastic and fresh new literary territories, and  this story is placed in a lost town of Congo, named Yangambi, and talks about  the mission of a group of  Belgian soldiers in Lepoldo II of Belgium Times.

Captain Lalande Biran dreams of return to Paris and his famous poet’s life, but his wife Christine asks him to earn enough money to buy seven houses in France.

The arrival of a new and enigmatic official Chrysostome Liege, has a dramatic impact in the ordinary life of the Belgian troops in Yangambi.

I liked so much this  fresh and original history, and only missed a deeper development of some characters, as the Black African Princess Bamu.

Rolling Stones – Paint it Black

August 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Yes “Paint it black” is one of my favorite songs.
The song is so sad…Sometimes your heart is black.
It’s true, but I always ask me what is the meaning of the lyrics.

Well, looking for “Paint it black” in Wikipedia tell us many things about it:

“The song began with Wyman playing organ at a recording session, in parody of the group’s former co-manager Eric Easton, who had been an organist. Charlie Watts accompanied the organ by playing a vaguely Middle Eastern drum part; Watts’ drum pattern became the basis for the final song. Brian Jones contributed the song’s signature sitar riff (having taught himself to play after a visit with George Harrison) and acoustic guitar, and Jagger contributed the lyrics, seemingly about a man mourning his dead girlfriend. The lead electric guitar and the background vocals are provided by Richards. The piano is played by Jack Nitzsche. The bass was also overdubbed by Bill Wyman playing on the bass pedals of a Hammond B3 organ.

Let’s go, turn up the volume on the music player, and push the Play button.
“Their Satanic Majesties” are here:

Lyrics.

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars and they’re all painted black
With flowers and my love, both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a newborn baby it just happens ev’ryday

I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I’ll fade away and not have to face the facts
It’s not easy facing up when your whole world is black

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not forsee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me before the morning comes

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

Hmm, hmm, hmm…

I wanna see it painted black, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun, blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah

Below is the “Karaoke version“, subtitled.
